Too late with Broad bean planting?

Postby simondebbi » Wed Feb 10, 2010 11:10 am

We didn't get around to planting broad beans last autumn and the cold snowy weather has delayed us so far this year. I nearly started them off in pots last weekend but didn't as the forecast was more snow and frost. Have we left it too late or will we just end up with a later crop? What do forum members think?

No it is never too late. Plant them straight in the ground and you should get a good crop, even it is a little later than those who did an early planting.

We left ours very late last year and had a superb crop.

That's a relief. Think it might be time for an experiment. I will plant one row direct in the ground and the same number in pots. I can then see which do best. I have a sneaking suspicion that unless the direct sown beans are very well protected the rats and mice might have them.

I have to say our crop this year was disappointing in quantity and was over very early but I gather lots of other people had the same problem. The beans we did have though were are delicious as ever. There's only one way to eat broad beans and that is very freshly picked. That's if they make it home at all as they are great snacks whilst working on the plot.
