Green manure

Postby simondebbi » Fri Feb 26, 2010 4:23 pm

We have a packet of green manure seed. Judging by the way the water is lying on the plot at the moment we certainly could do with some more organic matter in the soil. The instructions say sow March to June and dig in when the plants reach 9 inches in height.

Does anyone have any idea how long this might take and also how successful this could be overall for improving the soil?

Would we be better to wait and sow the seed in the autumn for digging in next spring?

Thought you might be interested to know that we planted a packet of green manure last week on the area recently vacated by our Early Potatoes. We're going to see how it goes in terms of adding organic matter to our very clay soil.
